Silas Weir Mitchell was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His full name is Silas Weir Mitchell Neilson. In 1987, he graduated n 1987 from St. Paul’s School, a college preparatory boarding school in Concord, New Hampshire. Later he attended Brown University and graduated in 1991 with majors in theatre and religion. He achieved an M.F.A. degree in 1995 at the University of California in San Diego.

On television, Mitchel is known for playing escapee Charles “Haywire” Patoshik on Prison Break and as Earl’s ex con friend Donny Jones on “My Name is Earl”. He also has a recurring role on “24” as Eli Stram, Numbers, and Cold Case. He had appearences on Monk, Six Feet Under, ER, The Shield, the three CSI shows, Medium, X-Files, Law & Order SVU, among others. In 2011, he landed the role of Monroe, the blutbad sidekick to Nick, on Grimm.

 

Fun facts:

He is named for after a notable ancestor, who was a physician in Philadelphia during the Civil War.

His first acting job was as Hansel, in a third-grade production of Hansel and Gretel, the Brothers Grimm fairy tale.
